Considering that the last week Safe House opened second, behind The Vow, and because this week we had an important premiere, the sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, I have to confess finding Safe House on the first place it's a big surprise.
The thriller Safe House starring Denzel Washington is squeaking out a victory in its second weekend of release, as current estimates have it making just a bit more than fellow holdover The Vow. Both films managed to best three new releases, though.
The romantic drama “The Vow” dropped to second place from first with $23.6 million in receipts.
In third place we find Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the 3D sequel to 2007's thoroughly mediocre yet still surprisingly successful Ghost Rider.
On 4th place we find the 3D sequel, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, generated $20.1 million.
The comedy “This Means War” opened in fifth place with $17.6 million. The movie features Reese Witherspoon as a woman who is romantically pursued by two deadly spies played by Tom Hardy and Chris Pine.
