Amelia movie synopsis: Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank) was America’s “Sweetheart of the Skies”, a charismatic aeronautical pioneer and the first woman to fly across the Atlantic.
She was also one of the earliest examples of the marketable celebrity, a face whose significant achievements could be hijacked to sell everything from cigarettes to travel luggage.
Director Mira Nair’s respectful biopic of the “goddess of light” skims over her early life in Kansas and joins her giddy ascent to legendary status when she’s taken under the wing of promoter and publishing magnate George Putnam (Richard Gere).
He’s unashamedly a money-man but is entranced by the feisty tomboy and begins a lucrative line of deals hitched to her aerial derring-do, taking flight with her trip across the Atlantic to Wales (she thought she had landed in Ireland).
As her fame takes off so does mass consumption of Earhart as a brand, a state of affairs she weathers with good grace as a working relationship with George turns to something more.
