I Am Love movie review: Emma Recchi (Tilda Swinton) lives a glamorous life as the wife of Tancredi Recchi (Pippo Delbono), heir to a massively successful business in Milan, Italy. With her children fully grown and experiencing lives of their own, Emma realizes she wants something more. The key to that just might be Antonio (Edoardo Gabbriellini), a gifted chef and friend to her son Edoardo (Flavio Parenti).
The buzz: A favorite at the Venice, Toronto and Sundance film festivals, "I Am Love" reunites Swinton with director Luca Guadagnino ("The Protagonists"), and reinforces Swinton's reputation as the most adventurous and unpredictable actress working today. Not only does she strip down for racy sex scenes, she performs her entire role in Russian-accented Italian.
The verdict: Like Swinton's performance, "I Am Love" is a bit of a show-off. Gorgeously fluid camerawork, a deafening musical score, lush Italian scenery, immaculately prepared food—it's almost cartoonishly sensual. But when's the last time a movie gave the audience so much that's actually pleasurable—instead of loud, obnoxious, disposable—to indulge in? The film's melodrama takes time to build, and eventually loses itself in narrative-hijacking tragedy. It's also, ultimately, quite familiar in its arc of a repressed woman finding herself through a younger lover. Yet "I Am Love" is presented with such force, commitment and artistry there's no confusing it for just another movie. This one is a passionate act of love. Source: Metromix
The film premiered in the United States at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and premiered in both the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival.
Box Office: As of December 2, 2010, the film has grossed $5,005,465 in North America and as of November 28, 2010 has grossed $5,392,509 in other territories, making $10,397,974 in total.
